Overview
Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins that most commonly appear in the legs. They develop when the valves inside veins stop working properly, causing blood to pool and the vein to swell. While often considered a cosmetic issue, varicose veins can cause significant discomfort and, in some cases, lead to more serious complications.
Varicose veins are common. Genetics, ageing and hormonal changes all play a part, as do conditions that raise pressure in the leg veins, such as pregnancy, being overweight or a job that involves standing for long periods. Treatment options range from conservative measures to minimally invasive procedures.
Symptoms
- Visible, bulging veins that appear blue or dark purple
- Aching, heavy, or uncomfortable legs
- Swelling in the lower legs, especially after prolonged standing
- Muscle cramping and throbbing in the legs
- Skin discolouration around affected veins
- Itching around one or more veins
When to seek urgent care
Varicose veins are not usually serious, but they can lead to complications. See a doctor promptly if you notice:
- Bleeding from a varicose vein
- An open sore (ulcer) on your leg or ankle that is not healing
- A vein that has become hard, red, warm and painful
- Throbbing pain and swelling in one calf or thigh, which can be a sign of a blood clot in a deep vein (DVT)
Call 995 or go to the nearest Emergency Department if bleeding does not stop with firm pressure and a raised leg, or if leg pain or swelling comes with shortness of breath or chest pain.
